Remember When

Reading about the great buys that all you bloggers have been finding inspired me to return to one of my favorite pastimes of years ago - Scouting out Estate Sales. I had forgotten what a thrill it is to come across that one of a kind bargain. And tell me, why is it that I think I can't live without an item after someone else picks it up and buys it!!! :) Does that ever happen to you? I love estate sales! I catch myself looking around at all the stuff left behind and picturing the lady that lived in the "estate". You can learn so much about a person by viewing the things surrounding her, the things she loved. What were her hobbies? Did she sew, knit, read, garden? When I'm gone and people rummage through my stuff, I hope my stuff goes to someone who appreciates what I had and why I had it.

At Saturday's estate sale, I found this well preserved 1968 Bride's Magazine. Notice, the original price tag - 75 cents! I paid twice that much for it. I don't know why I bought it. I guess I thought if the lady of this house kept it all those years there must be a good reason and someone else should keep it for at least another 41 years! Someone hand wrote on the cover "Patricia's bride book". I choose to believe that was her daughter and so she couldn't part with it. Maybe Patricia's wedding dress was displayed in that very magazine. I got a kick out of browsing through it, since (I hate to admit) this was the time when I was a bride.
Looking back, some of the styles were wild, but some like this next dress I still LOVE! Love the feminine lacy bodice and 3/4 length sleeves that bell out at the elbow.

How about this pillbox hat below! Are you "mature" enough to remember the "shift" style of these dresses?

And take a look at these poofy veils.

hmm...the fancy headdress was really popular.

Oh, take a look at this percolator ad. This would have certainly been listed on every bride's registry wanting a well-stocked kitchen.

I was tickled to see this ad for Betty Crocker's New Dinner for Two cookbook since I still have it on my cookbook shelf. As a new bride who had never cooked before, this book was my bible! I must have tried every meal in this book. Betty Crocker had a menu for every day of the week. What a blessing for me and my new husband!! :)

You know, I think my $1.50 purchase was well worth a sentimental journey of yesterday. Does it bring back any memories for you? Check out http://diane1876.blogspot.com/ for Second time around Tuesday for other great finds!

I was married in 1968 and I remember the sales clerk at the Bridal store showing me a picture of the dress I eventually chose in a Brides magazine. I wonder if it's that one? I had one of those styles...the cage type dress with an overlay of Venetian lace daisies. Please let me know if there's one like that in there. Wouldn't that be something?

I too cooked just about everything in that Cooking For Two cookbook. It was falling apart and a few years ago I found another one at a used book store and bought it for old times sake.

That was really fun and I recognized one of the models as an actress from an old show I can't remember right off. Now it will drive me crazy!

I couldn't have passed up that magazine either! I collect wedding memorabilia. I still have my original 1973 Bride's Magazine that featured my gown on the cover!
