This little table and chairs belonged to my daughters as children.
Some of you may remember pine furniture with a clear finish and cut-out hearts was very popular during the 80s. (uh oh, telling my age.)
Now that I have grandchildren, I decided to recreate this little dining set for them.
Since my kitchen cabinets were recently painted and distressed, I decided on the same finish for this little table and chairs, but with a twist.
First I sanded the wood finish and then painted everything but the top with SW Kilim Beige (just because I had it handy.) It happened to be the paint I used on my kitchen ceiling, but any soft ivory color would work for this effect.
As you can see, I painted the top with a primer. You’ll find out why a few photos down.
On everything else, painted beige, I brushed on a mocha glaze and wiped it off till I got the effect I wanted.
I also sanded a few areas that would have been worn naturally over the years.
I painted the top with chalkboard paint so my grandchildren can draw, erase, and draw again.
I also made chair covers out of a taupe and brown tiny check cotton fabric and added piping…
appliquéing their initials on the back.
Their table is now ready for Thanksgiving Day and for many fun times ahead.

Soooooo cute. Wow you can paint and sew good. I wish I knew how to sew and do piping like that. Thanks so much for linking this up.

Stopping by from the Boring to Better party!! How cute is that and love the chalkboard top!
As a grandma, ages 1 and 3, I am drawn to all kid stuff just like I was when I was a young mom. This table and chairs turned out beautiful. It's gorgeous, the color, and the chalkboard top - kudos to you, Grandma for understanding the nature of kids needing to draw on everything.
This is awesome Marsha- I love the chalkboard top and chair back covers. Bravo my friend!!
Hugs~

Hi Marsha
Talk about a transformation - this is fantastic. How cute and modern. I think the initial slipcovers add the perfect detail. I want to sit and play at the table myself.
My best-Diane

Visiting from DIY ShowOff! Umm... Roeshel says hi :)
Wonderful, I love the distressed look and the blackboard paint is just perfect for the table top.
Your granddaughters are so lucky!
So cute! I love the chair covers---adorable!!!
Love that! My kids use the table that my sister and I used, and our mother used as a little girl! I could never bring myself to paint it...but I'm tempted now...
What fun! And a great way to update a family piece! I'd rather hang on to things if I can! They'll love it! Jacqueline
This is sooo cute. What a fabulous job you did and the idea of chalkboard painting the top is genius. How they are going to love this. The slipcovers are waaay cute.

LOVE it!
So clever and cute. They will love it. i still remember a little table my grandma had for us to use and play on. This will be so special!
you are so talented!!
What a great little table set! I do remember the pine furniture and I think I have a little rocker in my attic! I'll have to go up there and get that down since I have a granddaughter now. She's only 4 months old but that will give me time to spruce it up {to 21st century standards} before she actually uses it! I can't believe I forgot all about that rocker until I read your post! : )
