Sunday Eve

watering can

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"

The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

“Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?   Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"

Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."  ~John 4:7-13

Of course, the setting above relates to ancient times, but we can easily make it talk to us by replacing some of the nouns.  And just what is “living water”?  What comes to your mind?

Come on and tell us how it talks to you.  J

We can not live without water. We may try to live without the Living Water, but if we do we lack
the nourishment our soul needs.
We wander a bout in the dry land of loneliness and despair. Our spirit withers and dry. Only the Living Water can wash us, fill us and satisfy us.

How right you are. It's kinda of like knowing the good foods to eat, but choosing to eat junk foods that won't give our bodies the nourishment we need.

This is one of my favorite stories in the Bible. Later, Jesus defines the "living water" that he spoke to the woman about:

John 7:38-39
"He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Yes, water is something no one can live without. No one can live eternally without the "living water". I always think of Jesus when I think of living water because of the scripture you quoted here.
Thank you for sharing.
Blessings,
Charlotte

Living water...I mentioned it on my blog today too. My soul would whither without God's word and love to nourish it.

It makes me think that the precious life-giving Words God speaks to me, I can share with another thirsty traveler along the way.

I was just reading a commentary on this very scripture. The ancient rabbis taught that when Moses struck the rock in the wilderness the water flowed and continue to flow throughout the Israelites journey...following them across the desert. I thought that was such a powerful picture of Christ and what He does for us. A perfect picture of His provision and sustaining power.

before water, was just air and sky -

depth came from His water - Life came from the depth of His water....

Reading that beautiful promise, a picture of a raging river came to mind. The water keeps flowing, so it's never stagnant. Same thing when we get to know and accept Him, He is not a passive God. He is always active and we must be the same way with the work that He started in each of us. And as the river ends in a vast ocean, so we, too will one day, be Home and be a part of that vast gathering. Thought-provoking! Really awesome! God bless.

Hi Marsha,
Sorry, I'm a bit late with my SS rounds. We cannot live without water, nor can we live in eternity with God without "the living water." Thank you for your post. I love the story of the Samaritan woman and the Lord. Have a wonderful week.

Blessings,
Sandi

Why is it that we all need water but tend to not drink it. I need His Word daily but find reasons not to spend time with him.

Have a blessed Easter Week!
